After a second day of massive demonstrations on Saturday, Turkish authorities have pulled back from central Istanbul’s Taksim Square, which has been the scene of heavy clashes between riot police and protesters as a movement to stop the demolition of a local park transforms into a broad push against the government. With police on the retreat, tens of thousands of protesters massed in Taksim and filled nearby streets, overturning at least two police cars and chanting for the downfall of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom they accuse of creeping authoritarianism.
